Misdemeanors
In California, a person convicted of a misdemeanor criminal offense can be fined and sentenced to serve up to six months in the county jail for some offenses, and up to one year in the county jail for other offenses. In addition, the court may place a person on probation and often require participation in classes and/or a treatment program, abstention from the use or possession of alcohol and drugs, and may even require a person to be subject to search and seizure of their person, place of residence and any area under their control. Some common misdemeanor offenses include DUI, theft, assault, battery, driving on a suspended license, and domestic violence.
